writing this up now that my daughter has a full semester of driving it behind her instead of me just being nervous the day she took it. some background. she is starting at Mizzou over in columbia and living off campus, so she needed a car that could handle the commute and still get her home to st louis on weekends without me lying awake worrying about it. i wanted the boring safe reliable stuff, good crash scores, cheap to insure a teen on, cheap to fix, nothing a college kid could get in trouble with. not fast, not flashy, just a car that would start every morning for four years.
if you have shopped for a teen you already know the trap. the private party listings in our price range were either salvage titles, sketchy 200k mile cars, or somebody trying to dump a problem before it got worse. i drove a couple off craigslist and one guy would not even let me take it to a shop, which told me everything. i was about ready to just overpay at a big dealer for the peace of mind when a coworker told me he had bought a car sight unseen off boonvilleautosales.com and it came in exactly as listed.
so i started watching what they had. found a 2018 Honda Civic LX sedan, 52k miles, one owner, clean carfax. asking was a couple grand under what the same car with more miles was going for at the dealers near st louis. i figured there was a catch, a Civic that clean and that cheap usually has a story.
i called the boonville lot. the guy actually knew the car, pulled the file while we talked. told me straight the key fob battery was weak and the passenger front tire was down a little on tread, and that there was a small door ding on the rear driver side he pointed out in the photos before i even asked. everything else was clean. clean title, one prior owner, the recall work all done. then he sent me a stack of real photos and a video walkaround, cold start, under the hood, and the tires so i could see the tread myself.
here is the part that sold me. even on a cheap first car i paid a mechanic in columbia 120 bucks to put it on a lift and scan it before i drove two hours. he came back and it was about like they said, one tire a little low, a cabin filter overdue, the fob battery, and the door ding. that was the whole list. no frame damage, no leaks, no codes.
so i drove over from st louis, about two hours, signed the paperwork with boonville auto sales, and my daughter had a safe honest first car. anybody else buy a first car for a kid or for yourself off that central missouri lot? curious how they are holding up for the rest of you.
